HLI Ceilidh Band has years of experience, mostly in Scotland, but has also played in Eire, Germany, Italy and Russia. We have played for weddings, family celebrations, student parties, fundraisers, works and social outings, commercial celidhs with Ken Gourlay, foreign visitors and schools. The set-up is Dave Robb (fiddle), John Macpherson (button accordion) and George Reid (guitar). Instructions and/or calling can be given for all basic ceilidh-style dances. Some notable gigs in our years of playing have been regular open nights at the Edinburgh Assembly Rooms, 2008 and 2009 Hogmany Ceilidhs at Queen's Hall Edinburgh, regular summer ceilidhs for overseas students at Edinburgh University Summer School, Buccherri Festival in Sicily, Astoria Hotel St Petersburg, Diefflen in Saarland, and Ballyseede Castle near Tralee, and hotels such as Cringletie and Peebles Hydro. We can provide limited instruction in Gaelic, French and German, and possibly some other European languages. If travelling abroad for a one-off booking, we are willing to work out a package for travel and accomodation, plus some food for 2 nights for 4 people - (Irene the fiddle player's wife will accompany us as dance instuctress, occasional bodhran player and 'general helper') - or to negotiate a fee to cover our own arrangenments. We are definitely a band for dancing to, rather than simply background music. We don't do rock and roll or ball-room.
